Today we learned that despite their claims that they support public education, District 51 School Board candidates John Sluder, Mike Lowenstein and Pat Kanda have taken money from Front Range billionaire C. Edward McVaney, who founded Valor Christian High School. McVaney also contributed heavily in 2011 to Douglas County School District School Board candidates Justin Green Williams, Kevin Larsen and Craig Richardson, who went on to win the election and then to support public dollars going to fund private schools, one of which was McVaney’s Valor Christian High School. The constitutionality of this is still being decided in court.
Voucher systems dismantle public education through a process of adverse selection. Private schools are not obligated to take our most expensive students: those with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, or behavior problems. By selecting only those students who cost public schools the least and then taking all of the state money, they leave the remaining students in public schools with dwindling resources to address their needs. Free public education is the cornerstone of our nation, and, simply put, voucher systems dismantle it.
Please get this information out to everyone you know. Facebook, email, make phone calls, and write Letters to the Editor. People need to know who and what they are voting for, and who and what they are voting against.
If you haven’t committed to walking on Saturday, it’s time to make that commitment. Look at what is at stake.
